Relocation is one of the biggest landmines in hiring.
It looks simple on paper, but one missed detail can blow up the entire deal, usually at the very end when you’ve already invested a ton of time.
If your location has a higher cost of living than where the candidate is now, you have to make up for it in their compensation.
Otherwise, they’ll spot it instantly.
Add in a big house to sell, kids in school, or a spouse with a job, and suddenly relocation costs and logistics can skyrocket.
And let’s be clear:
Very few candidates are going to pay for their own relocation, especially if they have a family.
Drop the ball on the relocation package and you’re back to square one with an empty chair in a critical role.
A few things to find out to get ahead of it.
▪️ Find out if the candidate has relocated before.
First-timers are a bigger risk.
▪️ Ask if they live in their own or their spouse’s hometown.
If yes, it’s harder to move.
▪️ Understand their local housing market.
A slow one could mean extended temporary housing costs.
▪️ If a spouse works, research the job market in the new city.
I’ve navigated relocations all over the country for plastics companies.
If you’ve got a critical role that calls for relocation, I know the questions to ask and the pitfalls to avoid.
