In recruiting for plastics and manufacturing, money isn’t a later conversation. It’s the first one.
People love to say, “It’s too early to talk money.” But that’s how you end up wasting everyone’s time.
When I take a job order, I ask for the range. If it’s off, I say so right away. If the company says it goes up to $150K, but I know the market is paying $170K for the same role, I’ll tell them. I’m not guessing — I’ve just filled that exact job.
Sometimes they tell me they don’t have flexibility, and that’s fine. Other times, they realize they need to adjust. Either way, expectations are set early.
When I talk to candidates, I do the same thing. I share the range and ask if it fits where they need to be. If the state doesn’t allow me to ask what they currently make, I ask what range they need to move.
That’s it. No games. No hiding the ball.
By the time we get to the offer, everyone already knows what’s coming. The candidate knows what to expect, and the company knows they’re within range.
The best part? Nobody has to “negotiate” at the end. It’s all been handled upfront.
If every recruiter talked money early, there’d be fewer dropped offers, fewer surprises, and a lot fewer “we’re too far apart” conversations.
It’s not about pushing for more pay. It’s about getting on the same page before the process even starts.
